Brad Leali Quartet featuring Carla Helmrecht

OH MY THIS IS GOOD! We featured this band earlier this year and are SO excited to have them back!

The sensitive and sophisticated vocal stylings of Carla Helmbrecht are the perfect complement to the soulful, blues- and swing-influenced style of the Brad Leali ensemble. Not only do they explore classic jazz standards and original materials, but they are able to infuse historical and modern components to their unique arrangements. This dynamic duo will be backed by a world class trio.

With a unique style and sound, which echoes the influences of his past, Brad Leali is one of the most notable saxophonists of current times. Leali toured and recorded with numerous jazz greats, including several years with the Harry Connick, Jr. Orchestra and with the Count Basie Orchestra. Leali was a standing member of the Kennedy Center Honors Band and performed for President Obama’s inaugural celebration. Brad has had a long-time endorsement with Keilwerth Saxophones and D’Addario Reeds. Currently the professor of jazz saxophone at UNT, Brad continues to perform domestically and abroad, including touring with Lyle Lovett & His Large Band.

“Saxophonist Brad Leali was among the most soulful and exciting I’ve heard recently.” – New York Times

Grammy-nominated singer/song-writer, Carla Helmbrecht, began her love affair with music at the age of eight.By age 13, she was singing professionally and continued her musical studies through high school and college. Early influences included Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Julie London, Shirley Horn, Nancy Wilson, and Blossom Dearie. Her dual career in music and Speech Pathology has given her a unique understanding of the balance between vocal efficiency and expression in this fragile instrument – the voice. Her recording ONE FOR MY BABY earned a prominent position on Gavin’s Jazz Chart, while BE COOL BE KIND debuted as “the most added jazz record on radio in the nation” and received three Grammy nominations. Carla is a featured artist on numerous other recordings, television and major motion picture films. She lives in San Francisco and tours nationally and internationally.

“… imaginative…poetic and sophisticated…She’s hip without being frenetic, laid-back without sounding haphazard, and best of all, the lady swings without sweating…the lyric writer’s best friend.” -Harvey Siders, JazzTimes

“She exudes warmth in spades…An unusually gifted vocalist, impeccable phrasing…steeped in a swinging jazz sensibility that reminds me of Mel Torme….” -Carol Archer, R & R Magazine

An Evening of Flamenco

7:30 PM19:30

An Evening of Flamenco

Flamenco is an art form based on the various folkloric music traditions of southern Spain , developed within the gitano subculture of the region of Andalusia. Flamenco fuses song (cante), dance (baile) and musicianship (toque). Cante is the vocal expression of flamenco, sung by men and women, preferably seated, with no backing singers. The gamut of feelings and states of mind – grief, joy, tragedy, rejoicing and fear – can be expressed through sincere, expressive lyrics characterized by brevity and simplicity.

Flamenco baile is a dance of passion, courtship, expressing a wide range of situations ranging from sadness to joy. The technique is complex, differing depending on whether the performer is male (heavier use of the feet) or female (gentler, more sensual movements). Toque or the art of guitar playing has long surpassed its original role as accompaniment. Other instruments, including castanets, hand-clapping and foot-stamping are also employed.

John Brothers Piano Company

Formed by a pair of former Cal Berkeley students who shared a love of early jazz and barroom blues, the band began as humbly and seemingly incongruous as possible, with the pair dragging their Wurlitzer spinet around to busk on street corners around San Francisco and the East Bay. The John Brothers Piano Company have built a devoted fan base one show at a time, blending timeless classics and original compositions with nearly irrepressible energy, and the lineup has expanded to a quartet of prodigiously talented multi-instrumentalists.

They’ve graduated from performing on the street to headlining many Bay Area venues The Chapel, Great American Music Hall, Bimbo’s 365 and performing at a multitude of festivals and events SFJAZZ, Stern Grove Festival, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, Oakland Art + Soul, Outside Lands and more. In addition to headlining their own shows they’ve performed alongside phenomenal artists like Karen O, Booker T, Joan Osborne, Sugar Pie Desanto, to name a few. Asked to describe their sound and approach by The Bay Bridged, the band responded, “This group is a punk band with jazz instruments and classical inclinations.” SF Chronicle

Hilary Gardner & The Lonesome Pines: Jazz Meets Western Swing

Vocalist Hilary Gardner, described by The New Yorker as “a singer with a beguilingly subtle wit,” grew up a New Yorker at heart in the jazz hinterland of Wasilla, Alaska. Following stints in Italy and Seattle, WA, she moved to New York City in 2003. Hilary has released four recordings as a leader, receiving critical acclaim from the jazz world’s major publications; DownBeat Magazine declared her “an artist to watch” and has named her a Rising Star Female Vocalist five times, including in 2024.

With her newest recording, On the Trail with The Lonesome Pines, Gardner returns to her rustic roots, delving into repertoire from the “singing cowboy” era of the 1930s-40s, songs described by The Times of London as “Manhattan-meets-moonshine gems.” Featuring Justin Poindexter (guitars, vocals), Noah Garabedian (bass), Aaron Thurston (drums), and Sasha Papernik (accordion), the album evokes the expansiveness and romantic allure of the American West–replete with purple hills, silver stars, and the freedom to roam, unhurried and unworried, under endless western skies. The Wall Street Journal deemed the album “something new and wondrous.” The group has performed to sold-out houses in some of New York City’s most esteemed venues, including Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center and Birdland.

Gardner’s new album, combines elements of jazz and Western swing with lyrics that evoke the spaciousness and romance of the American West. The record won the Western Heritage Award for Best Traditional Western Album of 2024 and was #7 on The Times of London’s 20 Best Jazz Albums of 2024. The album was also named Best New Vinyl Release of 2024 by Secrets of Home Theater and Hi Fidelity. Will Friedwald described the music in The Wall Street Journal as “a sound suggestive of the vast expanses of the open plains, a huge empty canvas that paints an internal picture—a surreal, extraplanetary prairie of the mind….something new and wondrous.”

Chris Cain Band

If you are a blues fan, it doesn't get any better than this!!!

Take some influence from B.B. King, Albert King, Ray Charles, and a pinch of Albert Collins. Add in dazzling blues and jazz guitar chops, a rich soulful baritone vocal delivering original, often wry and beleaguered lyrics with sophisticated chord changes and instrumentation, and skills on various horns and keyboards, all delivered with an uptown cool that never lacks searing passion. It all adds up to the one and only Chris Cain, who has gone from being a newcomer phenomenon bursting onto the blues scene in 1987 with a classic debut release, to being a legend, inspiration and long-established member of the blues pantheon.

His jazz-informed blues guitar playing is fiery, emotional and always unpredictable. His vocals—gruff, lived-in and powerful—add fuel to the fire. His indelible original songs keep one foot in the blues tradition and both eyes on the future. The pure joy Cain brings to his playing and singing is palpable, and draws fans even closer in.

"Hands down my favorite blues player on the scene today. He’s an absolute blinder of a guitarist, with the voice of B.B. King and the chops of Albert King." –Joe Bonamassa

"Chris Cain? Now that boy can PLAY the guitar!" –B.B. King

"Chris Cain is a hot-shot guitarist and a singer with the maturity of blues masters like Bobby Bland and B.B. King." –The Washington Post

Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini

Don't Miss This Show!!!

Trombone/classical guitar duos are very rare in Jazz. While few dare to exist beyond the occasional recording or live performance, Cressman and Faquini have transformed their platform into a sophisticated medium showcasing the extraordinary influence Brazilian contemporary artistry has had on music throughout the world. Tagged as the “Bossa Nova girl” while studying at the Manhattan School of Music, Cressman has always been inspired by Brazilian culture, frequently attending the California Brazil Camp in the mountainous enclave of Cazadero, California where she met Faquini, a Guinga protégé teaching at this annual summer gathering.

In time they discovered the dynamic nature of their instrumental pairing as well as the unique aperture it lends to the intricate nature of Brazilian music. Having mastered a resonant, open, and full bodied sound, Cressman and Faquini utilize a spacious tonal vocabulary, deft harmonic pairings and meticulous arranging that perfectly lends itself to the unique repertoire they’ve cultivated over the years.

Simplicity can feel like a rare commodity in our increasingly complex world. Knowing this, Natalie Cressman and Ian Faquini recognize that the simplicity of their instrumentation provides an introspective way to celebrate the legacy of música popular brasileira and the remarkable manner in which Guinga extends the vocabularies of its exceptional harmonic and melodic systems. Managing the perfect balance of space, pacing and musicianship, Cressman and Faquini have mastered the mechanics of unpacking the deep musical authority that defines the DNA of Brazilian music and the core of Guinga’s genius.

Cressman’s musical pedigree is impeccable, growing up as the daughter of vocalist Sandy Cressman and Santana trombonist Jeff Cressman, gaining fame as a member of Phish leader Trey Anastasio’s solo project, and working with Nicholas Payton and Wycliffe Gordon. A virtuosic instrumentalist and gifted singer, she’s a former member of the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars who has made good on her prodigious beginnings, working with a diverse range of artists including salsa icon Pete Escovedo’s Latin Jazz Orchestra, world music giant Jai Uttal and the Pagan Love Orchestra, and iconoclastic multi-instrumentalist Peter Apfelbaum.

Faquini, who was born in Brasília and now lives in Berkeley, California, was mentored by legendary Brazilian composer Guinga. Marina Albero

Pianist and composer Marina Albero presents music from her award-winning album A Nomad of Sound, a vibrant journey through jazz, flamenco, Latin, and Mediterranean traditions. Born from a residency in New Orleans, the music captures the city’s soulful energy and Albero’s own nomadic spirit—where cultural roots meet fearless improvisation.

Joined by bassist Nico Martinez, Albero brings to life the album’s rich tapestry of sound—from intimate solo moments to bold ensemble grooves. Described as a musical voyage and personal transformation, A Nomad of Sound is a celebration of movement, memory, and the power of connection.

Albero’s music takes the audience on a journey through time and space from her Barcelona hometown to Morocco, Cuba, Persia, Brazil and the U.S. Her life experiences thread through her compositions and improvisations, encompassing early music, Flamenco, Jazz and Classical.

Marina Albero was born in Barcelona, Spain, and started playing music on stages as a child with her family while they toured all around the world performing Iberian and early music, always creating new shows. In her early years she studied in Barcelona’s Conservatory (El Bruc) and later in La Havana, where she finished her classical piano studies.

Albero was the resident artist of the 2021 Earshot Jazz Festival where she sold out all of the four different concerts she premiered. In spring 2022 she was awarded with two Golden Ear awards, "PNW Concert of the Year" (Marina Albero featuring Ganesh Rajagopalan) and Acoustic ensemble of the year" (Marina Albero Trio).

In 2022, Albero was invited to curate three nights at the new concert series held at the Good Shepherd Chapel in Seattle under the umbrella of Nonsequitur, a space for new music and avantgarde performers.

In spring 2023 she was again voted and awarded as "PNW Instrumentalist of the year" as well as "PNW Concert of the year" for "Don't explain" with Jacqueline Tabor.

In 2024, Albero spent four months in New Orleans in a self made musical residency to write, arrange and record her latest album "A Nomad of Sound" (self released, November 2024) with some of the best musicians there . This album has been awarded "Recording of the year" by the Earshot Jazz community.

Albero’s versatile piano style can transcend genre or conform to an identifiable form. Underlying it all is a love for improvisation that has been greatly impacted by American jazz music.– Paul Rauch, Earshot Magazine

Marina Albero is a piano virtuoso. At times it seems like she’s playing the most polished standards – like she’s memorized Mozart back and front – but in fact she’s actually improvising.– Jake Uiti, Artist Home

The listener can hear a world of music in her playing, from jazz, to classical, to flamenco, and undeniably, the afro cuban rhythms that are so foundational in jazz music.– All about jazz

Josh Nelson, Eric Sittner and Kevin van den Elzen: West Coast Jazz

A don't miss event!!!

As one of the most astounding jazz pianists of the day, anything Josh produces is amazing...and this will be no exception. Nelson will be joined by veteran bassist Eric Sittner and Dutch drummer Kevin van den Elzen, who is a specialist in west coast jazz history.

Join us as the trio takes us on a review of West Coast Jazz. Past...present...future. West Coast jazz is a style performed by jazz musicians in California (and primarily in Los Angeles) in the '50s and early '60s. As opposed to the hard-bop sound dominant on the East Coast during that time, the West Coast sound was a bit mellower and more lyrical, with blended harmonies and — broadly speaking — more interest in composition and arrangement than improvisation.

Nelson has performed with some of the most respected names in jazz, including Kurt Elling, John Pizzarelli, Benny Golson, Sheila Jordan, John Clayton, George Mraz, Jeff Hamilton, Dave Koz, Joe Chambers, Peter Erskine, Samara Joy and Kenny Washington.

Eric Sittner originally hails from Chicago, and has lived in Los Angeles for the last 16 years. He has traveled around the world and played with numerous artists locally and abroad. He currently tours with vocalist Patti Austin, and plays with composer/jazz pianist Vardan Ovsepian and his jazz chamber ensemble, and many other amazing musicians around the LA area.

Kevin van den Elzen is an in demand jazz-drummer and bandleader originally from the Netherlands who works and resides in Los Angeles. Kevin has worked with musicians such as John Clayton, Bob Mintzer, Dianne Reeves, Gerald Clayton, Anthony Wilson, Nick Mancini, Paquito d’Rivera and many others.

Natalie Cressman and Ian Faquini Revolução Album Release

He went on to study at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley and immediately after graduating joined the faculty there. He is also on the faculty at California Brazil Camp, alongside musical legends including Ivan Lins, Guinga, Chico Pinheiro, and Spok. Ian has become one of the most unique and respected guitar players in the San Francisco Bay Area, with his distinct compositional style and harmonic sense. He is also a brilliant accompanist, which has made him an in-demand collaborator with vocalists in the Bay Area and beyond.

Sinatra: The Man, The Music & The Rat Pack

Possibly one of the best shows you can see!!!

This show will leave you spellbound! If you like music, tales and pizazz this is it. An amazing show of Sinatra's music - beautifully done - interspersed with tales about the real man behind the legend.

For the last 13 years Oakland-based vocalist Jefferson Bergey has been zig-zagging through multiple genres of music and comedy. He’s been channeling the voice of Gregg Allman in Freestone Peaches: A Tribute to the Allman Brothers Band for a decade. As a solo act and live-looper, he’s negotiated thousands of covers in an anything-goes show at Belle Cora in North Beach since the pandemic. He’s a featured vocalist with Jazz Mafia’s Grateful Brass and will soon be taking on the David Byrne role in a Talking Heads tribute in the fall. As a vocalist and bandleader he’s lead hundreds of bands on private and corporate events all over the Bay Area as well as corporate events in Barcelona, Hawaii, Cancun, Dallas, and Arizona. Now he’s taking on his most challenging musical costume yet, covering arguably the greatest singer of the 20th Century, Frank Sinatra. Sinatra may have been the greatest singer, but he was far from a perfect man. Bergey is pulling no punches as he tells sordid stories of the singer’s life against the musical backdrop of some of the best-known songs of the Great American Songbook. When asked why Sinatra, Bergey says “There’s something so classic and timeless about the songs and the way that he sang them. But then I started to learn about his life and that sent me down a rabbit hole that I’m still digging deeper into and I’m eager to share the stories and my discoveries with an audience.”

He also warned that this is not a classic, note-for-note tribute. “I’m not doing a Frank Sinatra impression. I won’t be wearing a fedora or tuxedo. If I quote him, it will be in context of a story I’m telling about the man and these will not be well-known stories! I’m singing his songs, but I’m also telling tales that are not the normal, bland fanfare and publicist-approved points that would introduce him on a prime time television show in the 60’s. This show will present both the bright accolades and the dark sins of a nuanced artist while showcasing the songs that make him undeniable for any generation.”

This show will focus on the tales and history of The Rat Pack, an informal group of singers that made films and appeared together in Las Vegas casino venues. They originated in the late 1940s and early 1950s as a group of A-list show business friends, who met casually at the home of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. In the 1960s, the group featured Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford. This will be entertaining!

Bergey will be backed by some of the best of the Bay Area including Andrew Dixon on tenor sax and all three of the incredible Hogan Brothers. Expect some very-special musical guests as well.

Kenny Washington Quartet

Kenny Washington is a highly acclaimed jazz vocalist, known for his soulful interpretations, seemingly limitless range, and inventive scatting. He's been called the "Superman of the Bay Area jazz scene" by the San Francisco Chronicle. Washington's style is influenced by classic jazz singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, while also incorporating elements of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway.

Kenny Washington thrills audiences across the globe with his soulful interpretations, seemingly limitless range, and rapid-fire scatting. The New Orleans native, now based in the San Francisco Bay Area, is described as one of “the Bay Area’s best kept musical secrets,” Washington’s astounding improvisational flights, inventive approach and emotional intensity are awe inspiring. If you have never heard this New Orleans native sing before, prepare to join a global audience that has been wowed by Washington’s talent.

"The thing is, Washington slays 'em wherever he performs. Standing not quite five-foot-two, he's an oversize talent who can scat with the harmonic daring and rhythmic command of a bebop saxophonist, croon with the simmering soul of Donny Hathaway, and interpret standards with such intelligence and emotional commitment it's like Rodgers and Hart wrote "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" with him in mind." -- Andrew Gilbert, eastbayexpress.com

Guinga!

Guitarist and composer Guinga is a popular songwriter in Brazil: his songs have been recorded by the likes of superstar Elis Regina and he's a favorite of musicians around the world like Michel Legrand and Sergio Mendes. But Guinga is less well-known in the U.S. (he rarely comes here to perform), and considering his successful five-decade career, he's an unusually modest musician.

Guinga's full name is Carlos Althier de Souza Lemos Escobar. He grew-up in a working-class suburb of Rio de Janeiro and his uncle taught him how to play the guitar when he was 11. At home, he heard Italian Bel canto, Brazilian and American music on his parents' Victrola. As a guitarist, he began his career accompanying Clara Nunes, Beth Carvalho, Alaíde Costa, João Nogueira, and Cartola. Many of his songs were recorded by acclaimed artists such as Elis Regina, Michel Legrand, Sergio Mendes, Chico Buarque, Miúcha, Ivan Lins, Leila Pinheiro, Fátima Guedes, Mônica Salmaso, and Hamilton de Holanda. He has collaborated with lyricists such as Paulo Cesar Pinheiro, Aldir Blanc, Chico Buarque, Nei Lopes, Sergio Natureza, Nelson Motta, José Miguel Wisnik, Simone Guimarães, Francisco Bosco, Mauro Aguiar, and Thiago Amud, among others.

In this show Guinga will sing and play his original music. The Brazilian singer and songwriter Anna Paes and Natalie Cressman (on triombone and vocals) will be his special guests.

Flamenco, which UNESCO recently recognized as part of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, is a complex art form incorporating poetry, singing (cante), guitar playing (toque), dance (baile), polyrhythmic hand-clapping (palmas), and finger snapping (pitos). It often features the call and response known as jaleo, a form of “hell raising,” involving hand clapping, foot stomping, and audiences’ encouraging shouts. Nobody really knows where the term “flamenco” originated, but all agree that the art form began in southern Spain—Andalusia and Murcia—but was also shaped by musicians and performers in the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe.

Terri Odabi Band

Terrie Odabi is nothing short of West Coast Blues Royalty. It has been written that she is “easily the most dynamic blues and soul woman to have emerged in the Bay Area since Etta James came out of San Francisco’s Fillmore District in the ’50s.” Only a singer with Odabi’s combination of power and finesse could hold her own amid those kinds of comparisons. What sets Odabi apart from so many of her peers are the different shades of hurt, longing, bliss, and depth she brings to the music. The distinguishable character of her voice rings out with a rousing revival of faith and reverence that has a drenching rejuvenation and sacred renascence complexity. Her abundant soul and improvisational prowess has made her a crucial contributor to today's Blues scene. Warmly embraced by Blues fans and peers alike, Terrie Odabi is one of the most respected talents in the Blues genre.

Her highly anticipated 2025 release, recorded at Greaseland and produced by Kid Andersen, showcases her artistry with collaborations featuring DK Harrell and Jimmy Carpenter. Andersen, a celebrated producer and musician, also collaborated with Terrie on the album, adding to its rich sonic depth.

Terrie’s songwriting delves into subject matters she is deeply passionate about, infusing her music with both personal conviction and broader social relevance. As fans await this new project, they can expect the same soul-stirring authenticity and artistry that have made Terrie a standout in the blues world.

Be prepared for a great evening!

Jules Leyhe & The Family Jules with Jefferson Bergey

Jules Leyhe might look like your everyday, average, unassuming guy, but he’s one of the world’s foremost blues slide-guitar players—so much so that even Premier Guitar magazine called his music “the best blues slide licks since Derek Trucks, maybe even Duane Allman.” Those might sound like some big boots, but this Oakland native not only fills them, he wears them out and has to order new ones. This year, he is showcasing a new blues series at the Sound Room, where Leyhe and his Family Jules Blues Blowout will be joined by local blues players from around the Bay each month. This month, they’re joined by guitarist and vocalist Jefferson Bergey.

Oakland based, Chicago native Jefferson Bergey leads a musically schizophrenic life. For the last 13 years Oakland-based vocalist Jefferson Bergey has been zig-zagging through multiple genres of music and comedy. At the Sound Room, he’s been taking on his most challenging musical costume yet, covering arguably the greatest singer of the 20th Century, Frank Sinatra. Bergey pulls no punches as he tells sordid stories of the singer’s life against the musical backdrop of some of the best-known songs of the Great American Songbook.

For this event, 2 friends team up with guitars in hand. It will be magical!

Suzanna Smith Quartet

"There are relatively few contemporary female vocalists who evoke Peggy Lee, at least not genuinely. Suzanna Smith numbers among that rare ilk. That Smith sounds like Lee — slightly breathy and warmly sensual with a hint of huskiness — is undeniable, but the parallels extend much further. Lee’s ability to not just caress a ballad but smother it in mink has seldom been matched. She was also a sage swinger — never too much, never too little — as well as a first-rate songwriter. Smith checks all those boxes."

— Christopher Louden, Jazz Times

Drawing upon timeless influences such as Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Shirley Horn and Helen Merrill, Suzanna Smith infuses songs with a style that’s pure, unadorned and soulfully subtle.

Ms. Smith leads The Peggy Lee Project, a collective dedicated to exploring the repertoire of Peggy Lee as both singer and lyricist. In 2022, The Peggy Lee Project was featured in the 39th Annual San Francisco Jazz Festival as part of SFJAZZ’s Centennial Celebration of Peggy Lee.

Smith’s second album, A New Day: The Peggy Lee Project from 2023 proves a successful follow up to her debut album Halfway Between Heaven & Love. Both present sage treatments of standards and showcase Smith’s talent for crafting original compositions and new lyrics to jazz instrumentals.

Smith’s approach was honed working closely with vocalists Laurie Antonioli and Madeline Eastman at The California Jazz Conservatory, in private study with esteemed vocalist Kitty Margolis and through the time-honored jazz tradition of many nights on the bandstand.

The Brubeck Octet Project

The Brubeck Octet Project

NYC Saxophonist Jon De Lucia has spent the past 10 years working with the original parts for the Dave Brubeck Octet, a short lived group in the pianist's early career, heavily influenced by Brubeck's time studying with Darius Milhaud at Mills. In 2024, De Lucia released The Brubeck Octet Project with saxophonist Scott Robinson and an all star New York band last year to critical acclaim. For the first time in 80 years, this music is returning to Oakland for an exciting show featuring Patrick Wolff, Erik Jekabsen, Alan Ferber, Mark Ferber, Adam Shulman, John Wiitala and Will Berg.

As one of the most famous and prolific jazz musicians of the 20th century, Dave Brubeck was so well documented there would seem to be precious few unexplored corners of his career. But Brooklyn alto saxophonist Jon De Lucia, a musician drawn to overlooked musical nooks and crannies, has uncovered and refurbished the long-neglected arrangements that launched Brubeck’s career in the late 1940s as a classical-curious student studying composition at Mills College on the GI Bill. The Brubeck Octet Project takes a fresh look at the West Coast’s alternative to Miles Davis’s epochal Birth of the Cool sessions.

Before gaining fame on the college circuit with his quartet in the mid-1950s, Brubeck was an experimentally minded player drawn to Oakland’s Mills College by French composer Darius Milhaud. The Octet started as a school project first known as the Jazz Workshop Ensemble and later as The Eight, and finally as the Dave Brubeck Octet. And like Davis’s contemporaneous sessions that came to be known as Birth of the Cool, the octet’s 1946-50 recordings were first released piecemeal before Fantasy compiled the tracks on the 1956 12-inch LP Dave Brubeck Octet.

While hewing close to the original charts, De Lucia opens up the long-buried material with space for solos, essentially reconducting Brubeck’s experiments from a 21st-century perspective.
