Flamenco!!

Flamenco!!

Flamenco is an artistic expression fusing song (cante), dance (baile) and musicianship (toque). Andalusia in southern Spain is the heartland of Flamenco, although it also has roots in regions such as Murcia and Extremadura. Cante is the vocal expression of flamenco, sung by men and women, preferably seated, with no backing singers. The gamut of feelings and states of mind – grief, joy, tragedy, rejoicing and fear – can be expressed through sincere, expressive lyrics characterized by brevity and simplicity. Flamenco baile is a dance of passion, courtship, expressing a wide range of situations ranging from sadness to joy. The technique is complex, differing depending on whether the performer is male (heavier use of the feet) or female (gentler, more sensual movements). Toque or the art of guitar playing has long surpassed its original role as accompaniment. Other instruments, including castanets, hand-clapping and foot-stamping are also employed. Flamenco is performed during religious festivals, rituals, church ceremonies and at private celebrations. It is the badge of identity of numerous communities and groups, in particular the Gitano (Roma) ethnic community, which has played an essential role in its development. Transmission occurs through dynasties, families, social groups and Flamenco clubs, all of which play a key role in its preservation and dissemination.

Featuring Fanny Ara - baile, Azriel "El Moreno" - cante, Marlon Aldana - cajon, Clara Rodriguez - baile y cante, David McLean - guitar. with a special SURPRISE OPENING ACT at 7:45

Tabula Rasa -- ‘the idea that individuals are born without built-in mental content and that all knowledge is derived from experience and perception’ -- excites and invites listeners into their soundspace with music generated through connection and without pre-conceived notion. Their chemistry as collaborators shines through each members’ unique compositional voice, letting audiences in on a culmination of years of friendship and commitment to pushing the music to its highest point.

Tabula Rasa features Devin Daniels on alto saxophone, Joey Curreri on trumpet, Jonathan Paik on piano, Dario Bizio on bass, and Mark Valdes on drums. As individual artists, they are all active and emerging voices in both the New York and Los Angeles music scenes.

Alto saxophonist Devin Daniels stands out as one of the most unique and versatile voices to emerge from LA’s rapidly evolving creative music landscape. Daniels has been invited to perform with bands led by Gerald Clayton, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, John Beasley, Sam Barsh and Jamael Dean. In 2023, the great Herbie Hancock invited Devin to join him alongside jazz legends Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Terence Blanchard, Chris Potter and LA-royalty, Kamasi Washington in a performance at the Hollywood Bowl honoring the late iconic saxophonist, Wayne Shorter. Following this performance, Hancock invited Daniels to join his band again, this time for a month-long US tour in the Spring of 2024.

Joey Curreri is a jazz trumpeter and composer from Los Angeles, California currently based in New York City. Curreri’s unique artistic outlook stems from the foundations in the trumpet tradition learned from his mentors, jazz luminaries Brian Lynch and Ingrid Jensen, whose creative inspiration has led Joey to compose music that looks to go beyond the trumpet, generating excitement, harmony, and balance within the orchestration of the small ensemble. As a working musician in New York, Joey has performed at the marquis venues with his own band and music, as well as a side man.

Jonathan Paik is a Los Angeles-born, New York-based pianist and improvisor/composer. Hailed as an exciting new voice on the piano, he has recorded or performed with the likes of David Binney, Alfredo Colon, Joe Morris, and Charles Downs. Jonathan’s playing has been heard in many of NYC’s most important spaces for creative music, including The Jazz Gallery, Close Up, IBeam, and Downtown Music Gallery. In 2025, Jonathan made his bandleader debut at The Jazz Gallery, presenting his collaborative quartet Fugitive. Artistically, Jonathan seeks to push the possibilities of piano-playing while unconditionally uplifting the music and people around him.

Dario Bizio is a bassist, improviser, and singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, CA. Having grown up in the diverse musical community of Los Angeles, he grew up loving and playing various genres on electric and upright bass. After graduating from USC in 2023 he began working as the touring bassist for Icelandic artist Laufey, with whom he took part in a world tour from 2023-2024. While continuing to perform and record as a freelancer in Los Angeles, Dario also writes and records music for voice and bass and has performed locally as a soloist.

Mark Valdes is a drummer, educator, and composer based in Los Angeles who has performed at venues and festivals across the world sharing the stage with world-class artists such as Tim Berne, Theo Bleckmann, John Daversa, Poncho Sanchez, Bob Mintzer, Barbara Morrison, Gordon Goodwin, Wayne Bergeron, and Vardan Ovsepian. Fula Brothers

Fula Brothers

Fifteen years ago, Malian hunters harp('kamale ngoni') player Mamadou Sidibe and American guitarist Walter Strauss began their colorful cross-cultural collaboration, evolving a deep joyful music that is simultaneously ancient and fresh. Together, they weave West African hunters harp, fingerstyle guitar, vocals, and a bounty of improvisation into an ecstatic groove-based dialogue which the heart - and the feet - cannot resist.

Master kamale ngoni player, Mamadou Sidibe, is from the Wassoulou Region of Mall, West Africa. He played a groundbreaking role in the transformation of this region's music from its origins in hunters' sacred melodies - played on six string donso ngoni (hunter's harps) - to a music of philosophy, politics, and dally life. Mamadou, with artists Coumba Sidibe and Oumou Sangare, spread the new sounds through Europe, Africa, and the US.

Fingerstyle guitarist Walter Strauss's multi-layered style draws on American roots, jazz, classical, and Spanish guitar traditions, and a decades-long exploration of West African stringed instrumental music. Acoustic Guitar Magazine says his innovative approach “has managed to elevate the instrument and the genre on the whole”. He has performed from New York to Glasgow and Bamako, and his collaborators have ranged from Grammy-winning kora player Mamadou Diabate to Scottish fiddler Johnny Hardie.

Teaming up TWO of the greatest Jazz Vocalists!!

Karrin Allyson, 5-time Grammy nominated jazz vocalist, pianist, and songwriter is widely recognized as one of the most gifted voices of her generation. With fifteen albums under her belt, she has built a mastery of The Great American Songbook, blues, pop, be-bop, Brazilian, and French chansons, to name a few. Allyson rose to prominence in the ‘90s, releasing a string of albums including her debut I Didn’t Know About You in 1992. The album earned such accolades as being name-checked in Playboy's annual readers' poll alongside such greats as Ella Fitzgerald and Shirley Horn.

Allyson continued issuing albums at a steady pace, picking up Best Jazz Vocal Album Grammy nominations for 2001's Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane, 2006’s Footprints, 2007’s Imagina: Songs of Brasil, 2011's 'Round Midnight, and 2015’s Many a New Day: Karrin Allyson Sings Rodgers and Hammerstein. Born in Great Bend, Kansas, Allyson now lives in New York City, after growing up in Omaha, Nebraska, attending high school in the Bay Area, earning her bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and spending time in both Kansas City and Minneapolis before making the move in 2000. Since moving to New York, Allyson’s band has consisted of such players as Bruce Barth, Ed Howard, James Williams, Adam Cruz, Steve Wilson, Miro Sprague, Jerome Jennings, and Jeff Johnson. The New York Times has called her a "singer with a feline touch and impeccable intonation."

Kenny Washington thrills audiences across the globe with his soulful interpretations, seemingly limitless range, and rapid-fire scatting. The New Orleans native, now based in the San Francisco Bay Area, is described as one of “the Bay Area’s best kept musical secrets,” Washington’s astounding improvisational flights, inventive approach and emotional intensity are awe inspiring. If you have never heard this New Orleans native sing before, prepare to join a global audience that has been wowed by Washington’s talent.

"The thing is, Washington slays 'em wherever he performs. Standing not quite five-foot-two, he's an oversize talent who can scat with the harmonic daring and rhythmic command of a bebop saxophonist, croon with the simmering soul of Donny Hathaway, and interpret standards with such intelligence and emotional commitment it's like Rodgers and Hart wrote "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" with him in mind." -- Andrew Gilbert, eastbayexpress.com

StorySlam Oakland

StorySlam Oakland is Oakland's longest-running true storytelling show, where people tell short and true stories from their lives. Or just listen and laugh.

How it works: The hosts will encourage audience members to shout out ideas for themes. It could be a theme you have a story about, or a theme you want to hear some true stories about. We'll write them down and then the fun begins.

You can also take your time between now and the show and craft a story on our pre-announced theme, which is Coming Clean. We usually have time for about 10 storytellers. Any story is good as long as it's true, about you, and five to six minutes long. We'll have a timer to keep you on track. Remember, no notes or reading allowed. You'll tell it like you're telling friends around the dinner table.

Hosted by creator Julie Soller & comic Inanc Ino.

The Family Jules play Abbey Road

We start with Jules Leyhe & The Family Jules. Jules is one of the world’s foremost blues slide-guitar players—so much so that even Premier Guitar magazine called his music “the best blues slide licks since Derek Trucks, maybe even Duane Allman.” His band is also top-notch - featuring Ian McArdle on keys, Isaac Schwartz on drums and renowned bassist Matt Roades. Join us as they pay tribute to the renowned Beatles.

The Beatles were an English rock band formed in 1960. The core lineup of the band was John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are widely regarded as the most influential band in Western popular music and were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and the recognition of popular music as an art form.

Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways. The band explored musical styles ranging from folk and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionized many aspects of the music industry and were considered leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Abbey Road is the eleventh studio album of the Beatles, released on 26 September 1969. It was the last album the group recorded.

Spike Sikes & His Awesome Hotcakes

Like hotcakes themselves, the music Spike’s Awesome Hotcakes plays goes by many names. Soul. Swing. Rhythm & Blues. Jazz. Jump. It’s a sound that’s classic and simple, but when it’s done right, it hits the spot, and has you grinning from ear to ear.

Spike grew up in El Paso, TX, studied jazz at The University of North Texas, started The Spike Band in 2004, recorded three albums with them, joined the Coast Guard in 2008, continued playing music wherever he was stationed (Maine, NorCal, and New Orleans), and formed Awesome Hotcakes in 2014. Some of his biggest influences include Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Van Morrison, Cleanhead Vinson, Gatemouth Brown, Lightnin Hopkins and Albert Ayler. Spike likes his coffee cold, black, and made with chicory.

From the Texas blues joints he cut his teeth in to the funky halls of New Orleans, he was always studying the music, trying to find just the right recipe. It makes perfect sense that he found his bandmates in Sonoma County, a music scene that has fostered many eclectic artists for decades.

What he didn’t know was how hungry audiences were for “this kind of music.” You might say they’ve been eating it up like…Hotcakes!

Vicki Burns Quintet

Jazz singer Vicki Burns is the complete package. With her three-octave range, sure sense of rhythm, and perfect intonation, she can scat convincingly, swing like a horn, and write hip songs worthy of attention from other vocalists.

She has produced three CDs as a leader: Siren Song (2005), Live at Anna’s Jazz Island (2008), and her 2022 release Lotus Blossom Days. Jazz writer Marc Myers said, "Vicki's voice on Lotus Blossom Days is warm and round, sophisticated and optimistic with shades of blue. She also takes terrific risks that pay off.”

As a performer, Vicki Burns has been delighting audiences for years with her impeccable taste and glorious tone. She has performed at some of the top jazz clubs and festivals around the country, opened for Billy Taylor and Max Roach in the “Bright Moments” Concert series in Amherst, MA., and she was featured on “Music America,” a syndicated WGBH public radio broadcast. She currently performs regularly in NYC at Birdland, Iridium Jazz Club, Jazz at Kitano, The Plaza Hotel, Zinc Bar and Mezzrow.

Burns has found success because she infuses each song with heartfelt expression, digging into the lyrics and melody to reveal their richness. It is a formula that has garnered her many fans and the respect of her peers, which is why Max Roach once described Burns’ singing as “a gold mine.”

“Brilliant vocals by Vicki… she can cast a love spell and she is, after all, quite the siren herself. An amazing range and you can hear the joy, the melancholy, the rapture, the devastation and all are equally convincing. Perhaps that is the final word on such a great talent as Vicki Burns, she is convincing.” The Jazz Owl by Travis Rogers, Jr.

“Like a master chef, Burns figures out what she needs to add to make the music delectable to the ear without overdoing it with unnecessary additives.” – All About Jazz

Guinga

Guinga

Guitarist and composer Guinga is a popular songwriter in Brazil: his songs have been recorded by the likes of superstar Elis Regina and he's a favorite of musicians around the world like Michel Legrand and Sergio Mendes. But Guinga is less well-known in the U.S. (he rarely comes here to perform), and considering his successful five-decade career, he's an unusually modest musician.

Guinga's full name is Carlos Althier de Souza Lemos Escobar. He grew-up in a working-class suburb of Rio de Janeiro and his uncle taught him how to play the guitar when he was 11. At home, he heard Italian Bel canto, Brazilian and American music on his parents' Victrola. As a guitarist, he began his career accompanying Clara Nunes, Beth Carvalho, Alaíde Costa, João Nogueira, and Cartola. Many of his songs were recorded by acclaimed artists such as Elis Regina, Michel Legrand, Sergio Mendes, Chico Buarque, Miúcha, Ivan Lins, Leila Pinheiro, Fátima Guedes, Mônica Salmaso, and Hamilton de Holanda. He has collaborated with lyricists such as Paulo Cesar Pinheiro, Aldir Blanc, Chico Buarque, Nei Lopes, Sergio Natureza, Nelson Motta, José Miguel Wisnik, Simone Guimarães, Francisco Bosco, Mauro Aguiar, and Thiago Amud, among others.

In this show Guinga will sing and play his original music. The Brazilian singer and songwriter Anna Paes and Natalie Cressman (on triombone and vocals) will be his special guests.

Nathan Nakadegawa-Lee - saxophone.    Kaz George  - saxophone  Isaac Coyle - bass.     Miles Turk - drums

Born and raised in Oakland, California, saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer Nathan Nakadegawa-Lee embodies a striking mix of sounds deriving from improvised, vocal, blues, and jazz traditions. He is a graduate of The New School’s Jazz and Contemporary Music program, where he studied with luminaries such as Melissa Aldana, Darius Jones, Tivon Pennicott, David Glasser, Or Bareket, Jon Irabagon, Anat Cohen, Joshua Rubin, and Ismail Lumaneovsky. As a performer, Nathan has appeared alongside generational artists such as Billy Martin, Faye Carol, Azure McCall, Selendis Sebastian Alexander Johnson, and Lesley Mok. He has performed internationally in Tokyo, and the Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland, in the Bay Area at Yoshi’s and The Sound Room, and NYC at Dizzy’s Jazz Club, The Stone, and Le Poisson Rouge. A big supporter of community organizing, Nathan hosts eclectic house shows and Improv Nights, and continues to compose, improvise, and perform in New York City and the Bay Area.

Kazemde George is an African American Jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator. Raised by Caribbean parents in Berkeley, California, Kaz has been playing Saxophone, Piano and Percussion in a wide range of musical styles from an early age.

Kazemde attended college in Boston where he completed the Harvard/New England Conservatory (NEC) Joint program, receiving his Bachelors in Neurobiology (Harvard) and his Masters in Jazz Composition (NEC). At NEC, Kazemde studied with Miguel Zenón, Jerry Bergonzi, Jason Moran, Cecil McBee, Donny McCaslin, Danilo Pérez, and John McNeil. In 2012, he received Harvard’s George Peabody Gardener Fellowship to study traditional music in La Habana, Cuba for ten months. Through his travels, Kaz has expanded his focus from Hip-Hop and Jazz to include the full spectrum of musical styles which blossomed from the African Diaspora, including Afro-Cuban, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Brazilian, and African-American traditions. As he sees it, the study of these musical styles serves as a way to regain cultural histories that were lost through the processes of African-American Slavery.

Isaac Coyle is a bassist, composer, and educator residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since graduating from the Berklee College of music in 2023, Isaac has become one of the top call bassists in the Bay Area jazz scene. In addition he is also a frequent collaborator in Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards band, performing throughout the country.

Raised in Oakland and immersed in the Bay Area’s vibrant music community, drummer Miles Turk seeks to follow the tradition in appreciating the cultural importance of blues, bebop, jazz, etc. along with shining a light on his own musical influences coming from R&B, Hip-Hop, Funk, & many more.

The Isaac Schwartztet plays the Music of Wayne Shorter

Wayne Shorter (August 25, 1933 – March 2, 2023) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Shorter came to prominence in the late 1950s as a member of, and eventually primary composer for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. In the 1960s, he joined Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet, and then co-founded the jazz fusion band Weather Report. He recorded more than 20 albums as a bandleader. Many Shorter compositions have become jazz standards, and his music has earned worldwide recognition, critical praise, and commendation. Shorter won 12 Grammy Awards. He was acclaimed for his mastery of the soprano saxophone since switching his focus from the tenor in the late 1960s and beginning an extended reign in 1970 as DownBeat's annual poll-winner on that instrument, winning the critics' poll for 10 consecutive years and the readers' for 18. The New York Times music critic Ben Ratliff described Shorter in 2008 as "probably jazz's greatest living small-group composer and a contender for greatest living improviser". In 2017, he was awarded the Polar Music Prize.

Oakland native Isaac Schwartz brings his band of musical collaborators and lifelong Wayne fans to pay tribute to their collective hero. The night will feature Wayne's early work with the Jazz Messengers and solo recordings all the way through to the music he made with the Wayne Shorter Quartet, which pushed boundaries for the last 20 years.

Isaac first heard Wayne on his seminal album, "Speak No Evil" and fell in love with its impressionistic yet propulsive sound. The music was sensitive yet bombastic; intuitive yet clever; cryptic yet soulful. Finally when Isaac was 16, his father took him to see Wayne live. Isaac wasn't sure if the modern music Wayne was making was really his vibe and boy was he wrong. It was the greatest show he'd ever seen and got him screaming in his seat. The intensity created by Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, and Brian Blade with Wayne at the helm was undeniable. That concert changed the direction of Isaac's life and caused him to fully invest and dedicate his life to music. Isaac is honored to get to pay tribute to his musical father and guiding light in life, Wayne Shorter. ALL HAIL WAYNE!

Kenny Washington Quartet

A masterful vocalist and “the superman of the Bay Area jazz scene” (SF Chronicle), Kenny Washington is easily among the most beloved and soulful singers working today. A native of New Orleans, Kenny grew up singing gospel music in church and playing saxophone in the school band. He continued his music studies at Xavier University where he became interested in various styles ranging from traditional and contemporary jazz, to classical, to rhythm-and-blues and pop. Joining the U.S. Navy Band in 1986, Kenny performed and toured nationally and internationally through out the U.S., Asia, Russia, and Australia. After nine years in the Navy, Kenny made his home in the San Francisco Bay Area where he established himself as a top vocalist.

While performing with the Michael O’Neill Quintet at the Douglas Beach House, Kenny met vibraphonist Joe Locke who happened to be in the audience. This led to an invitation to perform with Joe at Dizzy’s; Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC). Since then he has been a featured artist at JALC for over ten years where he has appeared with Joe Locke, Eric Reed, Eric Alexander, Joe Lavano, Branford Marsalis, Roberta Gambarini and Wynton Marsalis. With Wynton, Kenny has performed both in small groups and large including numerous times with the "Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.” In 2013 Kenny was featured in Wynton’s oratorio: "Blood On The Fields" which also included vocalist Gregory Porter. Kenny has headlined performances in Japan, Russia, Scotland, Shanghai, Denmark, Mongolia and many other countries. He has performed at top Jazz Festival including the Monterey Jazz Festival, Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival and the San Jose Jazz Festival.

Kenny is a jazz vocalist virtuoso. Emulating the classic styles of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan and infusing colors of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, Kenny's free, playful approach, with over a four-octave range is awe inspiring. His tone on ballads is liquid and his scat singing - informed by his saxophone playing - is rapid-fire, passionate, melodious and inventive. His intonation is so precise that it becomes noticeable if the piano wasn’t tuned that day. Kenny is considered by many to be the premiere male vocalist on the planet today. This man is a must-see.

Jules Leyhe & The Family Jules with Adam Levy

We start with Jules Leyhe & The Family Jules.

Jules is one of the world’s foremost blues slide-guitar players—so much so that even Premier Guitar magazine called his music “the best blues slide licks since Derek Trucks, maybe even Duane Allman.” His band is also top-notch - featuring Ian McArldle on paino, Isaac Schwartz on drums and renowned bassist Matt Roades.

Then we add a special guest to create something new and exciting!

This month the featured guest is Adam Levy.

Chalking up an enviable career to luck is characteristic of the soft-spoken Levy, whose humility is echoed in his musical voice. Much as he chooses his words wisely, Adam is tactful and tasteful in his guitar playing, never stepping into a solo spotlight without something meaningful to add to a song. One great example is his guitar work on the Norah Jones hit “Come Away with Me.” Understated but memorable, Levy’s solo draws on elements of jazz and country to reflect perfectly the simple, earnest sentiment of the composition.

Making music with Norah Jones was just one experience in a string of elite gigs for Levy. A few years prior he had met Tracy Chapman, who enlisted him to play on her mid-’90s masterpiece, New Beginning. Levy’s guitar earns the limelight in the bluesy “Give Me One Reason,” which won Best Rock Song at the 1997 Grammy Awards. More recently, he has worked with Ani DiFranco, Rosanne Cash, Jamestown Revival, and Allen Toussaint.

Rebecca Kleinmann and Friends : an Evening of Brazilian Choro

Choro, or chorinho ("little cry"), isa vibrant instrumental music genre that originated in 19th-century Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is characterized by fast tempos, virtuosity, intricate syncopation, and improvisation, often blending European salon dances (polka, waltz) with Afro-Brazilian rhythms. Considered Brazil's first popular urban music, it typically features flutes, guitars, and cavaquinho.

Rebecca Kleinmann, internationally acclaimed flutist and singer returns to the Bay Area to lead a night of Brazilian music with master musicians Zack Pitt-Smith, winds; Carlos Oliveira, guitar; Ami Molinelli Hart, percussion; and Brian Moran, cavaquinho and guitar.

Based in California until 2022, Rebecca Kleinmann has led her Quintet in various formations since 2001, touring internationally with this and other projects to Brazil, Australia, Europe, Africa and within the US. Pianist Benny Green made special note of her unique pursuit of artistic growth, explaining that “Rebecca is masterful and selfless in her ability and inclination of melding her sound with her environment.” In the words of Latin Grammy Nominated pianist and composer, Jovino Santos Neto, Rebecca plays flute with the passion of a flamenco dancer. Upon completing a June 2023 recording session in NYC, Grammy winning pianist, Taylor Eigsti said Rebecca "brought the music to life."

She began synthesizing her diverse musical interests as a flutist and vocalist at Indiana University, where she began her studies as a Classical Flute Performance major and historically graduated as the first Jazz Flute major in the history of the school’s Jazz Studies program, thanks to the support of her beloved mentor, the late David Baker. In addition, she has studied vocal performance with Fabiana Cozza and Jennifer Barnes. Her varied experiences as a vocalist include performances with the Taylor Memorial Gospel Choir and teaching vocal performance to thousands of elementary school children as an Orff-certified music educator in public schools. Both in teaching and in performances with the RKQ, Rebecca often utilizes her fluencies in Portuguese and Spanish.

In early 2022 Rebecca moved from Oakland to Durham, North Carolina and immediately began planting seeds to continue her musical career on the East Coast. She has become a professor at UNC Chapel Hill, directing the university's "Charanga Carolina" ensemble, recorded and performed with Grammy winning pianist Taylor Eigsti, and received a Chamber Music America grant to fund her next album. Come enjoy this amazing ensemble full of shining stars in the intimate setting of the Sound Room.

Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini

Trombone/classical guitar duos are very rare in Jazz. While few dare to exist beyond the occasional recording or live performance, Cressman and Faquini have transformed their platform into a sophisticated medium showcasing the extraordinary influence Brazilian contemporary artistry has had on music throughout the world. Tagged as the “Bossa Nova girl” while studying at the Manhattan School of Music, Cressman has always been inspired by Brazilian culture, frequently attending the California Brazil Camp in the mountainous enclave of Cazadero, California where she met Faquini, a Guinga protégé teaching at this annual summer gathering.

In time they discovered the dynamic nature of their instrumental pairing as well as the unique aperture it lends to the intricate nature of Brazilian music. Having mastered a resonant, open, and full bodied sound, Cressman and Faquini utilize a spacious tonal vocabulary, deft harmonic pairings and meticulous arranging that perfectly lends itself to the unique repertoire they’ve cultivated over the years.

Simplicity can feel like a rare commodity in our increasingly complex world. Knowing this, Natalie Cressman and Ian Faquini recognize that the simplicity of their instrumentation provides an introspective way to celebrate the legacy of música popular brasileira and the remarkable manner in which Guinga extends the vocabularies of its exceptional harmonic and melodic systems. Managing the perfect balance of space, pacing and musicianship, Cressman and Faquini have mastered the mechanics of unpacking the deep musical authority that defines the DNA of Brazilian music and the core of Guinga’s genius.

Cressman’s musical pedigree is impeccable, growing up as the daughter of vocalist Sandy Cressman and Santana trombonist Jeff Cressman, gaining fame as a member of Phish leader Trey Anastasio’s solo project, and working with Nicholas Payton and Wycliffe Gordon. A virtuosic instrumentalist and gifted singer, she’s a former member of the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars who has made good on her prodigious beginnings, working with a diverse range of artists including salsa icon Pete Escovedo’s Latin Jazz Orchestra, world music giant Jai Uttal and the Pagan Love Orchestra, and iconoclastic multi-instrumentalist Peter Apfelbaum.

Faquini, who was born in Brasília and now lives in Berkeley, California, was mentored by legendary Brazilian composer Guinga. He went on to study at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley and immediately after graduating joined the faculty there. He is also on the faculty at California Brazil Camp, alongside musical legends including Ivan Lins, Guinga, Chico Pinheiro, and Spok. Ian has become one of the most unique and respected guitar players in the San Francisco Bay Area, with his distinct compositional style and harmonic sense. He is also a brilliant accompanist, which has made him an in-demand collaborator with vocalists in the Bay Area and beyond.

Charles Wheal Band

Charles Wheal Band

Charles Wheal walked into a bar in Blacksburg Virginia to hear Muddy Waters' old guitar player "Steady Rollin" Bob Margolin light up the stage. That night, he went back to his apartment, picked up his roommate's acoustic guitar, and hasn't been without one since.

A few years later, he moved to London to pursue a career in global finance, but his passion for playing won out. Following in the footsteps of other English musicians steeped in the blues, from Peter Green to Stevie Winwood, Charles came back to America to delve deeper into the heart of the music he felt compelled to play.

After an apprenticeship in the historic clubs of Chicago, Charles was pulled further westward, to one of the epicenters of the contemporary Blues scene--San Francisco. Wheal got the call from harmonica player Mark Hummel to fill the guitar chair in his band. He played on all of Hummel's releases since then, including three Harmonica Meltdown CDs (Mountaintop) and Hummel's Electro-Fi CDs, "Golden State Blues", "Blowing My Horn", and "Ain't Easy no More". Over the years, Wheal has played with a virtual who's-who of blues greats, including James Cotton, Snooky Pryor, Sam Myers, Joe Beard, Steve Freund, Charlie Musselwhite, Kim Wilson (The Fabulous Thunderbirds), Rod Piazza, Rick Estrin (Rick Estrin & The Nightcats), James Harman, Paul Delay, Jerry Portnoy, Lee Oskar, Magic Dick, Huey Lewis, Jody Williams, Jr Watson, Billy Branch, Curtis Salgado, Maria Muldaur, Bob Margolin, Anson Funderburgh, Cal Valentine, Detroit Jr, Barrelhouse Chuck, Billy Boy Arnold, and of course Mark Hummel. For almost a decade, he anchored Mark Hummel and the Blues Survivors, playing with some of the greatest musicians of their generations, criss-crossing North America and Europe to packed halls, and playing festivals and clubs to dedicated fans of blues and jazz from around the world.

In October of 2006, Wheal decided it was time to devote his energy to his own band. Charles and his band can be found playing at all of the best Bay Area clubs, providing a mix of Chicago, Texas, and West coast blues that gets crowds on their feet and keeps them there.

An Evening of Flamenco
May

7:30 PM19:30

An Evening of Flamenco

Featuring Jesse Torres on Guitar, Carola Zertuche dance, Mizuho Sato dance, Pirouz Ebadyour canta. Mizuho Sato dance, Damien Alvarez dance. Join us for an incredible evening!

Jules Leyhe with The Guitarsonists

As part of his ongoing residency, Jules Leyhe will be appearing with two other GREAT guitarists: Mike Schermer and John Del Toro Richardson. The trio is known as The Guitarsonists.

Mighty Mike Schermer has been touring and recording for well over 30 years with such legendary figures as Elvin Bishop, Charlie Musselwhite, Marcia Ball, Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur, Howard Tate, Angela Strehli and many more. He has also carved out a solid solo career, releasing 8 critically acclaimed albums and garnering a ton of attention for his songwriting in particular. Schermer’s songs have been covered by blues award recipients Tommy Castro, Billy Price and the late Frank Bey to name just a few. His autobiographical single “My Big Sister’s Radio” was recently hand-picked by none other than Bruce Springsteen to be included in The Boss’s “From My House to Yours” on Sirius/XM’s and is now in regular rotation! His songs and albums have been nominated for multiple awards and he has performed in all 50 US States and 25 countries around the world in a journey that is far from over.

Jonn Del Toro Richardson grew up around Houston, Texas, and you can hear it in every note he sings and plays. You can hear the Latin music that is his birthright and the influence of the country and R&B music that was played in his house, and particularly the blues that drifted strongly over his grandparents’ backyard fence from the next neighborhood and took hold with Jonn to be the centerpiece of his musical identity. John has performed with many of his blues heroes, like Albert King and Otis Taylor. Blessed with a blistering axe and killer vocal chops with considerable soul and range, Richardson brings a “Big Ole” slab of smoking modern Texas swagger and swing to his stage performances.
